How did your dreadlock journey start? Well I've been doing dreadlocks professionaly sense 2001, I have a memory of trying to make some as early as 1996. ( Totaly different story) I started to realise that I was a bit jelaus of my clients dreadlocks, gooing ah... I realy realy what another head of dreadlocks again. The earge got bigger and bigger and I had no idee what was holding me back, only maby that I have a scalp that can be itchy and if I dont take care of my roots of my dreadlocks regualrly my scalp itches like hell... But I realised that Its just stupid of letting something like that holding me back. So one day in febrary of 2013 when I was going to redo the hairextenisons, synthetic dreads, and braids I had in my hair I decided that it was time to start making dreadlocks out of my own hair. I started in the neck

What kind of hair do you have naturally? I have kind of boring silky hair that is really straight I have to realy work hard to get my hair to want to dread.

How are your dreadlocks made?

I started my dreadlocks by backcombing my hair and then crochet it together and then I added some extra human hair extension hair that I crochet into my own hair and made a longer dreadlock. This is because I wanted to have long dreadlocks from the beginning. I didn’t do my hole head at once I did some in the neck and then after a few weeks I did some more and some more. My last dreadlocks I added this summer. A video on the method I do is here:

Ann-Maries Dreadlock Journey This is when I started my dreadlock journey I only had dreadlocks in the back of my head when this pic was taken.

How did people around you react when you said that you were thinking / getting dreadlocks? Well I don’t think I got any type of reactions. Sense I’ve been working with dreadlocks for so long and been doing crazy stuff with my hair for years (I have had feathers, plastic tubing, wire, fabric, hair extensions etc.) I believe people almost expect that I have dreadlocks even before meeting me.

How have the reactions been after you become a dreadhead? Do you experience that people are different towards you? Well I get picked out when I in line in customs allot. Sometimes people move from seats in the subway.

Did you get inspired by anyone special that made you want to get dreadlocks? I have some memories from being a teenager and seeing Lenny Kravits on mtv:

Another video that I realy liked watching was:

And I always loved watshing Simply Reds videos:

I grew up when the internet was non existent so I guess MTV and WH1 was a way that you get get inspiration of stuff that was not normal in the Swedish small town that I grew up in.

Did you do a lot of research before you started your dreadlock journey? Well not really I used all the knollage that I’ve had from working with dreadlocks for years and also I used my different dreadlock courses that I’ve taken over the years.

How old are your dreadlocks now? Between 3-4 years old the once that are in the neck are older than the once I have on top.

How many dreadlocks do you have? 73 and I have some extra synthetic dreads to add some more color to my hair.

How did you take care of your dreadlocks in the beginning? Well after the fist two weeks I washed my hair and then kept on washing my dreads once a week. I crochet them when I felt like they became fluffy. I used some dreadlock gel from Knotty boy: http://dreadstuff.com/collections/dreadlock-maintenance-products/products/knotty-boy-locksteady-tightening-gel-230-ml also to help tame my hair. My hair is very silky and nice and really doesn’t want to dreaded so I really have to work on my hair to make it want to dread. Now 4 years later I have to work with my loose hair that I have on top to keep that hair not to dread. So If you have problems with your hair doesn’t want to dreadlock hang in there eventually it will happen =)

Did you think it took a while before your hair stared to naturally dread in the beginning? Well my hair doesn’t want to dread good at all by it self. I’ve tied some string in my hair :

It helped allot to have the string at the root but I noticed that it takes allot longer for my roots to dread them self comparing to many of my clients that come in for dread maintained to me.

Did your dreadlocks tighten up a lot the fist year, maybe you lost some length of your dreadlocks when they mature?

I noticed that I lost a lot of length the first year of having my dreadlocks, and they got thicker as well and that I really like.

For a while I decided to change my haircolour to brown and I had some orange/brown on the ends of my dreadlocks. Here are some pics form this period.

How do you take care of your dreadlocks now?

When it comes to my own dreadlocks, I’m really lazy, I think it has to do with that I do everyone else’s hair all the time and I don’t really have time to take care of my own. I wash them once a week, I try new dreadlock shampoos all the time because I need to test out the stuff that you can buy in the shop. Sometime I use some tightening gel on my dreadlocks when they are damp. And I’m really in love with http://dreadstuff.com/collections/dreadlock-maintenance-products/products/dollylocks-dreadlock-conditioning-oil-nag-champa Makes my dreadlocks feel and the smell is addictive =)

Do you maintain them at all? I do crochet the regrowth once in a while, otherwise I don’t do so much.

Do you do anything special to your dreadlocks while sleeping? I just let them be loose. Sometimes my husband gets irritated because they are poking at him but I don't realy care.

Here you see pics from when I got married. I decided to curl my dreadlocks for this lovley unforgettable day.

How do you keep your dreadlocks clean?

I wash them once a week with different dreadlock shampoos that you can find in the shop: http://dreadstuff.com/collections/dreadlock-schampo

Do you use any dreadlock products in your dreadlocks? Ive tried everything that we sell and use some of them on a regular basis.

Is this your first time as a dreadhead? If no, Tell us a bit about your dreadlock journey before this. If you’ve had dreadlocks before how did you take them out? I did have dreadlocks one time about 10 years ago, but I got tired of them and one day I just cut them of. I guess I didn’t have the energy to commit to the dreads then. I only had them for a year. I was bleaching my hair and dyeing it bright red and that made them feel dry and boring so I decided to cut them off one day

Do you have any dreadlock commandments?

Be a Proud Dreadhead don’t let people say stuff to you make them understand that It is something to be proud of! I’ve had loads of strange shit thrown towards me , I wrote a blog about that a while back: http://dreadstuff.com/blogs/news/14787945-judgment-towards-dreadlocks I love being a dreadhead and I’m Proud of it!

What is the best tip you can give to someone that are thinking of getting dreadlocks done but are a bit hesitant? Don’t listen to what others think. Follow your heart and just do it!
